My name is Gurshawn (Shawn) Jagpal.

I am born in Vancouver, Canada during the 1990’s. I am a dual citizen of Canada and America. I have been in America since 2002.

I studied at University of California, Santa Cruz. I got my Certificate of Accounting Proficiency from Santa Clara University. I have passed all three levels of the CFA exam and 2 levels of the CAIA exam.

I am CPA and am Notary Public licensed in the State of California.

I have been investing since age 13 right before the Great Financial Recession of 2008. I have been trading/investing/monitoring the markets through the following events:

  • The mid 2000’s commodity boom
  • From 2008 to 2009, Great Financial crisis when the S&P 500 fell more than 50%
  • 2011 Eurozone Crisis and US losing their AAA credit rating
  • The sluggish recovery of US housing during the early 2010’s
  • Unorthodox QE policy leading to low credit yields where some sovereign debt yields were even negative
  • Rise of the US technology stocks.
  • Brexit which caused the British Pound to crash in value.
  • Trump enacting trade wars against China during his First term
  • The great COVID, where indexes crashed more than 30%
  • Stock market crash of 2022 where stocks fell due to high inflation and FOMC raising interest rates
  • The Current stock market boom caused by AI.
  • Currently, navigating the markets through Trump’s second presidency.

Over the years, I have also spent time learning how foreign exchange, fixed income, derivatives, and crypto markets work; and how they connect to the real economy. I care about both the big picture and the structure underneath the price.

I follow technology and how it can be used by small businesses to boost productivity.

This site is where I publish notes on those topics. Views are my own and are not investment, tax, or legal advice.

My hobbies include going to the beach, spending time with my cats, exercising, and reading the news.
